The best first task to hand to an AI assistant repeats at least weekly, works from documents you already have, has a result a person can check in a few minutes, and takes someone more than an hour today. Pick by what sounds impressive and it will be a demo.

The four rules

  1. It repeats. Weekly or daily.
  2. It reads something. Invoices, tickets, a price list, competitor sites, last week’s numbers. Tasks without sources produce generic text.
  3. Done is obvious. A list of exceptions, a draft, a digest. If nobody can say what a good result looks like, the assistant can’t either.
  4. It costs an hour or more. Below that, the setup isn’t worth it yet.

Seven tasks that fit

Task Schedule Works from Result Who checks it
Invoice check Mon 07:00 Last week’s invoices, agreements, price lists Exceptions list Finance
Weekly brief Mon 07:00 Internal reports, open items One page: last week, this week, decisions needed Owner
Competitor scan Thu 09:00 Competitor sites, news Three things worth knowing, with sources, one draft post Marketing
Support digest Fri 15:00 Support export (uploaded), help articles Top questions, draft answers with sources, one article gap Support lead
Quote draft On request Price list, two similar past quotes, the customer’s request Draft with line items and assumptions to confirm Sales
Overdue follow-up Tue 08:00 Ledger export, customer history export Draft reminders ranked by amount and age, tone matched to history Finance
Month-end prep 1st of month Ledger export, bank export, previous close Reconciliation flags and a plain-language P&L narrative Accountant

Each can be written as one sentence. In the example on our home page, the invoice check is: «Go through last week’s supplier invoices and flag anything that doesn’t match our agreements.» The assistant gets the folders once; the schedule does the rest.

How to write the sentence

Name the source, the action, and the shape of the result. «Read X, do Y, give me Z.» Avoid adjectives. «Professional» means nothing to an assistant; «flag anything over the agreed rate» does. If you can’t write the sentence, the task isn’t ready, and that is useful to know before you spend credits.

What happens on the schedule

The task runs, the result lands in the app and in your inbox, and the person who checks it gives it Good or Bad. Bad asks what was wrong: for example wrong content, wrong format, missing sources, too long or short, or wrong tone. «Run again» takes your feedback with it, and every line of the memory it builds from your feedback can be read, changed or deleted. When a task works, turn it into a skill with one click.

What it costs

Each run uses credits, depending on how much it reads and writes and how thorough you ask it to be (Quick, Standard or Thorough). Nrth OS shows an estimate before every task, warns at 80% of your credits and stops at the limit. A weekly invoice check over a few dozen invoices uses far fewer credits than a daily scan over hundreds of pages, and you see the estimate before you schedule it.
